Interesting insurance question...

If you have your aircraft insured for "ground not in motion" only, and it is stolen, would it be covered if it was damaged as it was flying away? Or as a further wrinkle, if it is a named pilot only policy and the pilot that steals the plane is not named....what then?

Even if it is not insured for flight coverage the first thing would be the coverage provided from the theft of the plane. If the plane was stolen, it should be covered for the theft. The loss would be caused by the theft, which would be covered, so it shouldn't matter if it was ground not in motion or not.

Check your policy and see what it says about theft?
